Profile of Harris County, Texas:  Harris County is a Southeastern Texas county. Harris County was named after John Richardson Harris, who first arrived in this area in 1824. On December 30, 1835, the General Council created the Harrisburg Municipality and designated the town as the seat of its government. On April 21, 1836 the Battle of San Jacinto was fought in what is now Harris County. This was the deciding battle of the war between what would become the Republic of Texas and Mexico. In 1836 the name of the area was changed to Harrisburg County. In 1839 the name was again changed to Harris County.
